Holidays are quickly approaching and although Christmas is one day, celebrations stretch on for days and sometimes weeks. Studies have shown that majority of people gain additional weight during this extended festive season.

The holiday schedule is heavily inundated with social calls such as corporate parties, family get together, weddings, vacations and the like with most people choosing to park their nutrition and workout routines.

Excessive eating and zero physical activity are claimed to be the main cause for the additional weight gain but here are eight tips that will help you enjoy the holidays while staying healthy:

Set A Goal and Plan

Although the holidays are all about enjoying yourself, take a moment to evaluate your current weight and health status and set a goal. Example – To avoid adding excessive weight over the next 2 weeks, I will make sure I work out at least 2 or 3 times a week instead of the usual 5. In the event of a vacation, find out what facilities will be available at your hotel, resort or the vicinity. If nothing is available, plan to carry jump ropes, resistance bands or find a workout that can be performed using your body weight.

Create Accountability

Just because you will be going out to dinner or an event later doesn’t mean you don’t eat all day. Starving yourself only means you will end up overeating and overeating triggers fat storage. Eat an hour or 2 before heading out to an event or function. This will keep you from overeating naturally and minimise calories.

Consume Alcohol in Moderation

Besides overeating, consumption of alcohol, sodas and other sweet drinks should be limited. Eating a hearty, rich meal and having calorie laden drinks is a recipe for fat gain disaster.

Stay Active by Involving Your Friends and Family

Just because it’s the holidays, don’t get sedentary. Find fun and engaging ways to stay active while also being inclusive and participate in activities such as hikes, pool games, volleyball, long walks. These are all fun ways to stay active while spending quality time with friends and family.

Enjoy Yourself

Feel free to indulge in small quantities of things that you normally don’t eat but remember, moderation is key.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water helps control your appetite and prevents hangover should you enjoy a drink or two.

Once the season is over, have a plan in place and get on it to avoid extending the holiday period long after the season has concluded.
